1. Power-dense form factor
Within the context of professional robotics applications, Spiroid’s power density is perhaps its most important attribute. This power density is rooted in its comparatively high percentage of gear teeth being engaged by the pinion at any given time – generally around 10%.
Tooth geometry, pinion geometry and the center-distance between the driven and driving member axes also play a role in Spiroid’s impressive power density.
All of these features combine to enable small, lightweight form factors with high torque capacity – perfect for professional robotics applications.
2. Through-hole capability
For cabling and/or hardware purposes, many professional robotics applications require a through-hole in the face gear. Spiroid and Helicon can accommodate this need with little to no impact on other important performance characteristics.
3. Wide range of reduction ratios
Spiroid and Helicon are capable of reducing speeds through ratios ranging from 3:1 to almost 400:1 – all in a single stage. Comparatively, most other right angle gear forms require a minimum of two stages of reduction to achieve such high ratios. There are simply no other right angle gear forms that are capable of spanning these wide ranges of ratios.
4. Customization and design flexibility
As long as specific static dimensions are acknowledged and applied, there are really no limits to the potential customization of Spiroid and Helicon’s surrounding geometry. This ability to customize allows for incredible design flexibility as professional robotics design engineers seek to incorporate Spiroid’s capabilities into their demanding designs. (Note: a description of ‘static dimensions’ can be found here while these are examples of ‘static dimensions’)
5. Simple and positive backlash control
Spiroid and Helicon gears are completely insensitive to their axial position. This feature provides for easy backlash adjustment by merely moving the gear along its axis using shims.
For more finite backlash control, Spiroid pinions can be adjusted along their axes’ within a range of positions.
No other gear types offer this feature in such a simple and direct way.
